Siding Warranties Explained
What to ask about product coverage versus workmanship.
Separate product and workmanship coverage
A manufacturer warranty generally addresses defined product defects under stated conditions. A contractor workmanship warranty addresses installation responsibilities. One does not automatically pay costs excluded by the other.
Ask for both documents before work begins and identify who receives a claim, who inspects it and whether removal, labour, access or replacement finish are covered.
Read exclusions and maintenance duties
Coverage may depend on installation according to published instructions, proper maintenance, acceptable alterations and prompt notice of a problem. Coastal exposure, impact, movement, colour change and consequential damage may be treated differently.
Keep cleaning and inspection records when the warranty requires maintenance. Avoid methods or chemicals the manufacturer prohibits.
Preserve the project record
Save the contract, final invoice, product line, colour and lot information where available, installation date, photographs and warranty registration. Ask whether coverage transfers to a future owner and what paperwork is required.
Treat broad sales phrases such as lifetime or maintenance-free as prompts to read the actual definitions, limits and remedies.
