Vinyl vs Fibre Cement Siding
Where the materials differ in handling, maintenance, appearance and planning cost.
Movement and installation are different
Vinyl panels expand and contract, so fastening and clearances must allow movement. Fibre cement is heavier and more rigid; cutting, edge treatment, fastening and required clearances follow the selected manufacturer's instructions.
These differences affect labour, accessories and sequencing. Ask how the crew will handle penetrations, corners and transitions for the exact product.
Compare finish and maintenance expectations
Vinyl colour is integral to the panel and routine care is generally cleaning and inspection. Fibre cement is available in factory finishes or field-applied finishes; repainting expectations depend on the product, coating and exposure.
Neither option is maintenance-free. Inspect caulking where specified, damaged pieces, clearances and places where water repeatedly contacts the wall.
Compare complete systems, not samples
Request installed pricing that includes trim, starter components, flashing interfaces, waste and disposal. Confirm whether insulation or a rainscreen is part of either proposal.
Use manufacturer documents for technical limits and written contractor scopes for project responsibilities.
